This is just one of the lovely polaroid composites by Patrick Winfield - via the aptly named “shit we’re digging” section of the wooster collective.

Ever wondered what peas in a pod looked like under and x-ray? Me neither, but it does make for a nice image…

Check these awesome Nike Retail posters out. They very impressively create the illusion of flat 3D space favoured by the Russian Constructivsts but actually using 3D objects to begin with, but then photographing them back into 2D… Ahhhh, its all a bit too po-mo for me… The short story is they’re lovely :) Photography courtesy of Maurice Scheltens, art direction by Liesbeth Abbenes.

This is an amazing stop-motion film charting the (literal) rise of the Tokyo skyline. Not even being 35 years old, the sheer dedication and ambition of the task truly astounds…

They might not have the imposing scale of his canvasses, but if Mark Rothko had a polaroid he would’ve made beautiful images a lot like Grant Hamilton. I really like the faded, almost 70’s quality of the colours. Such a nice distinction from our perfectly flat/uniform fields of computer-generated colour. Reminds me a bit of iso50…

Lovely little treasure trove of random, funny, inspiring (and otherwise) wall scribbles. Gives some insight into the vernacular creativity bubbling away in people all over the world - whether they make a living off of it or not. via Leigh

Virgin Mobile Australia has launched a new campaign around the strap “Are you with us or what?” which uses a Flickr feed to populate the site - overlaid with an insightful question to which you’re encouraged to respond. But because they are using a certain CC license, they didn’t (and rightly so) ask permission and now there’s a lively debate raging.
Personally, the fact that every image carries a link to the author’s Flickr account, is enough for me… Getting your stuff in front of as many eyeballs as possible has to be a good thing - even if a massive corporate can be seen to be profiting off you for nothing… Welcome the CC future ;)

Brilliantly simple visual reinforcement of the line “Sensodyne Protects” - with lots of black and just a centred logo / tagline at the bottom. via i believe in adv

Through my continuing my research into layers, I came across the photography of Michael Wolf. Based in Hong Kong, he takes tightly cropped photographs of the city’s residential skyscrapers. Divorced from the ground and/or horizon line, they cease to be architectural photos, and become beautifully entrancing patterns. I can only imagine how insane these must be when blown-up.

Remember those porcelain dolls your grandma used to have on the mantlepiece? You know, the *really* precious (and presumably expensive) ones? The ones you always wanted to smash to bits? (OK, maybe that was just me…) Well, so does Martin Klimas, and that’s just what he does. According to Herr Klimas, most things look better/beautiful in the act of being destroyed, like flowers for instance - so beautiful and delicate - just begging to be blasted to smithereens!!!

Hidden Town by Gregor Graf is a world without the visual clutter - no design, no advertising, no cars, no people, no dirt, clear blue skies and certainly no fragile human emotion. No, this is an architects wet dream - nothing but the built environment. Apart from the fact that it makes everything look like a 3D render, it also reminds me of the *new* São Paulo.

So the photos are a bit cheesy, but What the World Eats its an interesting visual comparison of the inverse relationship between fresh produce and total expenditure. Interestingly Germany (it must be Germany, the bottles are so neatly arranged) tops out at 500 USD a week for 4 people…

Running the Numbers: An American Self-Portrait is an aethestic poem on the un-abstraction of statistics (otherwise known as data visualisation). Interestingly, rather than using Flash or some other computer-based methodology, Chris Jordan uses photography.
Above you can see 2x images of the same work, “Prison Uniforms, 2007″. Measuring 10×23 feet in six vertical panels, it depicts 2.3 million folded prison uniforms, equal to the number of Americans incarcerated in 2005. These must be truly amazing at their 1:1 scale…

Solid work by DDB in this purely visual campaign for Tonka, “Ain’t no girlie sissies gonna be playin with ma boy!” If only sandboxes were like that when I was a kid!
