‘Now Showing’ is an exhibition “exploring the Lost ‘Art’ of the Film Poster” currently at The Cosh Gallery in London. 40 creatives were asked to submit a design/illustration for an iconic film. The two below stand out to me, especially the bold elegance of the ‘Birds’ poster by Corey Holms / Marian Bantjes. See the full set at flickr.

As you know last Friday was the Grand Final of Secret Wars and I’m stoked to say that Wen completely wiped the floor with Odisy. Pics below…
With one judge each, it was decided on the crowd vote and I’m sure Odisy will put it down to Wen having more crew or something else. But the funny thing is that Odisy was so certain he’d win, and his piece so arrogant and juvenile in its simplicity (I’m not talking about line here, but content) that it was poetic justice for “the unkown art fag” to annihilate the old-skool graff boy. Goes to show that thought / insight / content always stomps style.
Big up Wen!

For those that weren’t there, the cap on Odisy in Wen’s piece was the one he was wearing that night, as were the glasses.

Pink Teddy Invasion is a self-initiated project by the very talented illustrator Cristina Guitian. The cute style of the bears is juxtaposed with a series of deformities, seemingly as a response to the generic perfection of our media culture. And its the fragility of these deformities that makes each bear feel so human.
Using her friends as “agents” to spread the stickers globally, the project is also an experiment in the power (and dedication) of the network. Real people find real ‘homes’ for the teddies. And each new home that is found is photographed and uploaded to the project archive by the agents themselves, preserving the authenticity of the message that we should celebrate diversity.
And of course, there’s a facebook page you can join to stay on top of all future sightings!

Scarface, everyone’s favourite movie, right? You reckon you know a few of the lines huh?
Well you don’t know shit compared to Joseph Leibovic, founder of L.A. Pop Art. Why? Because you didn’t take the entire 300 page script and painstakingly handwrite it out in different colours to form not one, but several, scenes from the movie (and other’s such as the Godfather), using a technique known as Micrography. Well did you?

Who ever knew spam could look so good? I love Linzie Hunter’s typographic illustrations of spam message titles. Her style nods to Parra, but is softer and better suited to the more down-to-earth content that she so wonderfully brings to life.

Lie-ins and tigers (aka Sam, Walter and Russel) are a collective based in London and although they could use a shiny new website, they do really nice illustrations, like the ones above. Oh, they’re also really nice guys, and if you were at Designer’s Block in Holloway this year, you’ll surely remember their cowboy/old geezer/dick combo!. Anyway go and check them out.

Something of a silly idea, for Pfanni but the naivety of the illustration is perfect, and above all it made me giggle and then smile ;) Part of a series including Mother Teresa, Ghandi and Robin Hood. Great work out of Hamburg from Jung von Matt.
Importantly, each of the executions works independently. You don’t have to see the series to ‘get it’, which is more than can be said of numerous executions in this latest campaign for a new men’s magazine Shortlist by TBWA\London.

Good archive of Polish poster design since 1940, with a bit of Saul Bass thrown in for good measure (and I guess influence/reference).

Continuing on the Russian Constructivist tip, Daily Soviet Poster is a more traditional archive, more militaristic in its subject matter and with that hardness not present in the previous post.

Good archive of Russian Constructivist inspired ads / posters. The time periods seem to differ wildly, but what I find interesting is a softness present in many of them, which is not often seen in this style…

The lovely hand-crafted illustration of the latest Stella campaign continues throughout the UK (is this a global campaign?) with this latest iteration on the strength of the brand heritage. The bomb and bunker idea is a powerfully simple idea and the art direction is also very strong.

The second series of ads in as many weeks to take a naughty/sexy approach to content. Done for the Konzerthaus Dortmund, and using a really nice minimalist-line style of illustration to visually reinforce the friendly feeling of the strapline “A place where music feels at home”.

Nice series of illustrations from Honda illuminating jargon-heavy product points in an interesting and certainly very different-to-their-competitors way. The quirky style reminds me of a blend between Parra and the recent Nike 6.0 aerial stuff. Click through for the other 3 in the series.

OK, so he’s been the *it* boy of illustration for some time now, but how can you not like the incisive reality and persistent humanity in the work of Parra? New posters over at Rockwell Clothing. So go check ‘em out!
