I don’t normally go in for country music, but this is something else.
Dave Carroll got screwed by United Airlines, they refused to take responsibility for breaking his guitar. After 12 months of useless phone calls appealing to the corporate beasties, he decided instead to write a song and post it on the youtube.
Nearly 3,000,000 views later and after coverage on CNN et. al., United decided to play ball. To Dave’s credit he told them to fuck off, because by now he was having fun and they were hurting badly.
Major PR hassle (read: expense) and serious customer fallout over a $3,500 dollar guitar. Go figure. Another case of big brands with zero understanding that the balance of power has shifted away from them and firmly into the hands of their (creative) customers.

Seeing this makes me think of how my mother used to think spinning vinyl was ‘just not how you make music’. Nostalgia for real wax aside, it seems to me that this is a bit too clinical and (potentially) takes a lot of the skill out of DJing. Almost like being able to see the waveform is cheating, as you no longer need to ‘feel’ the music.
But in time i’m sure kids will grow up knowing that they can touch any screen, and expect it to react. Then this will be OK, and we will most certainly be in the future. Or maybe that will be when someone ports this software to the iPhone and tells Andrew Andrew (of the legendary NYC iPod parties) about it?

RCRD.LBL might be a whack early noughties name that’s trying too hard to get down with the yoof, but the concept itself is interesting. Basically its the music industry slowly slowly starting to wake up (maybe, let’s not get too excited now) to the fact that if you pay for music produced by a big record label you’re a dinosaur. Everyone downloads music (for nix) so why not give it away and at least make some ad money along the way?
Definitely something to keep track of… If you ask me, donating direct to the artist the equivalent of their cut from a CD (what is it? like £1 or £2 only) is the model that i’d be following if i was in the music biz. But i’m not, so i’ll shut up now.

This is simply (super-geeky) gold! The lyrics are funny, its a piss take of all the shithouse rap produced lately and above all I love the shout out to old rap videos with the (shitty) purple halo on the green screen work and the posterising – although its got nothing on MIA’s latest effort.

This is a nice little piece of motion, well shot and well edited. Also very good if you like percussion-based music ;)

The reacTable is a thing of true beauty and tactility. Created by the Music Technology Group at the Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona, its one of the coolest pieces of new tech I have ever seen.
They describe it as “a collaborative electronic music instrument with a tabletop tangible multi-touch interface”. You kind of have to watch the video to understand what this means, but the simple version goes like this: ‘fucking amazing’! Essentially it demystifies the production of sound, but apart from this invaluable educational aspect, its a truly interactive thing which just makes you want to play with it more and more. this is the golden aim of physical computing made real.
NB to all you trance producers out there, if this ever gets into the mainstream you’re going to be completely fucked ;)

What better to sell boring clothes than a bunch of Japanese guys doing weird dances? The loop-based mixer idea is by no means a new one, but this is executed very well nevertheless. And you just can’t help but enjoy Japanese guys trying to be superfly b-boys!

A beautifully simple idea makes this a very watchable little film…

I reckon Lupe Fiasco’s new album ‘Food and Liquor’ is pretty crap (cover art excepted), but I do like this track… Maybe cause I grew up skating and this vid has that home-made skate movie feel to it, or maybe just cause the beats are so simple, or maybe just because summer is on the way out and the laid-back quality of this track reminds me of that… Whatever…

Focussing “only on sound, not songs” – The Freesound Project is an online library of 20,000+ samples released under the Creative Commons license. Again a boon for all us visual creatives in need of sound and strapped for budget…

Using the tagline “Meet. Mix. Mashup.”, Splice is a new concept in sound/music creation. Its essentially a sound library released under the Creative Commons license that encourages the community to reuse, redit and generally just mash-up the available content… Could be a boon for visual creative types needing some (free) sounds. Let’s hope the quality is better than the average web 2.0 / user-gen rubbish

One of the best things about living in London is the amount of culture at one’s disposal. Indeed the limit is too-often defined by my wallet – and never on the good side ;) Having said that though, I had the good fortune to see Fritz Lang’s ‘Metropolis’ with a full orchestra performing the score live. Not unexpectedly, this was one of the greatest film moments of my life. The raw power of the orchestra added something electric to the atmosphere of this already brilliant and visionary film. If you haven’t seen the film you must, and if you happen to get the chance to see it with a live orchestra, so much the better!!!

Possibly the most re-definig music video of all time, Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ deserves a special place in every little creative boy’s heart (sorry, couldn’t resist – obviously all you ladies out there should be down with it too, but the (bad) joke only works one way I’m afraid)

This is one of the simplest ideas I’ve seen in a while. Brilliantly executed, its a bit like South Park meets Monty Python… Basically all your favourite album art from the last few decades battles it out against a pretty nonsensical script. You’ll be simling and giggling, trust me…
