Laptop Friendly Cafes goes all-iPhone on us

    lfc_iphone_app_hero_london.jpg

Back in June we blogged about a (then-new) service called Laptop Friendly Cafes, which basically wants to formalise what the global creative nomads amongst us already know – that offices are soooooooooooo 20th Century.

Well, they’ve just released an iPhone app which has saved me on more than one occasion during the past few weeks as i was waiting for broadband to be re-connected after moving. Using the inbuilt GPS, the app finds your location and within moment is pointing you towards the nearest free wifi via google maps.

With an ever-expanding database of cities such as New York, London, Melbourne and Sydney, its USD$0.99 well spent IMHO.

The only drawback is the lack of the ‘add new cafe’ functionality. It seems a no brainer that the fastest way to build this database is through on-the-spot UGC, sitting in a cafe and feeling inspired rather than having to go online and do it via the website. But i’m sure its coming soon…

Get your local free wifi on with Laptop Friendly Cafes.

Flash on the iPhone / iPod Touch

    The-Affair.X.Iphone

Apple fanboys pony up, cause my brand the-affair is officially the very first t-shirt brand with a mobile store, accessible through everyone’s favourite gadget. That’s right, our awesome Flash website is now available on the i’m-so-very-very-cool-but-still-can’t-play-Flash, iPhone. That’s right fanboys, you heard right – FLASH ON THE IPHONE!

So how did we achieve this little bit of tech-magic I hear you ask? Well, actually we did very little… All you’re going to need is the VNSea client released recently, and obviously a VNSea server running on some other broadband computer that you can then control. Its a tad on the slow side too, but hey, that’s the price for the bleeding edge.

Thanks to Kamil, our resident Flash guru :)

    Google and mobile

There’s tonnes of buzz flying around about Google and its impending foray into everything mobile, but this little piece of news is interesting and scary in equal measure. Today they have launched a beta technology called ‘My Location‘ that uses “triangulation to provide you with approximate location information, so it will work on phones without GPS”. This is pretty big news for consumers as previously this tech was something reserved for governmental agencies and Hollywood alike.

What’s the benefit to the big G then? Well of course if they know where you are, even roughly, then they can micro-target local ads to your phone. And with the release today of figures showing that there’s over 3.3 billion mobile accounts on our little planet and 59 countries with mobile penetration over 100 percent, the big G’s obviously not in it for the goodwill.
