Anyone with even a passing interest in motion graphics knows Pleix, and their awesome piece ‘Birds’ (bottom image). Which is why I find this new work for Mercedes’ C-Class Estate by Agency Republic (top image) so disappointing.
OK its a different breed of dog, and there’s no neon in sight - but its the same camera and exactly the same idea. Oh hang on, they put non-living things in front of the camera too? Oh sorry, that makes all the difference… Sure the paint looks nice, but it says nothing conceptually (except lazy creatives). The production isn’t even the half of the Pleix original, so there can be no ‘extending the idea’ defense either.
All in all, a great shame because their previous work for Benz has been so very nice…

Something of a cross between Dove’s ‘Evolution’ and Lucky Diamond Rich, this simple yet extremely provocative ad for the new BBC series ‘White’ visually reconstructs the proposition that Britain’s white working class are becoming invisible. Sure to get tongues wagging in the BNP…

Andy Goldsworthy is just a big kid in an infinite playground with a very very delicate and deft touch. via LAEM

This is (the best) one of a new series of ads for the compression software stuffit.
What I love is how simple the idea is and how profoundly it delivers the product benefit - take something large (in this case in duration) and literally compress it to almost nothing. As an idea its got awesome potential for growth and near limitless application, bar real-life.
And from a media perspective, the fact that they are so short works directly to their benefit, as there’s just no way that suffit has the media spend of other software companies like Microsoft or Adobe.

This Friday night at 1001 (Truman Brewery) is the Grand-Final of the current series of Secret Wars. The music is always great and the battle is always tight. So if you’re in London there’s nowhere else to be…
More importantly though, this time my good mate Wen (who did the above illustration for the-affair) is up against Odisy for the golden marker. Doors open 6pm, and the battle starts at 8pm. Come early (it will pack out quickly) and support!

Sound of Colour Is a new campaign from Gap.
Although it is a shamelessly direct copy of the brilliant adicolor campaign, I still think its interesting from the perspective that they are funding the creation of real content (5x songs and accompanying music videos) but only licensing it for the duration of the campaign. After that, the artists are free to use the music as they wish. Not sure if this is part of a wider trend, but it certainly feels more ‘real’ and less like marketing than normal.

PicLens is something very very special. Quite simply its a better way to search for images. A browser add-on, it uses the metaphor of a never-ending wall to display image results from google (or flickr) in a more natural way than simply by ‘page’. The infinite non-space of PicLens makes the act of searching for images a joy.
I think their brief must’ve been to re-create the experience of lightbox - where there is nothing apart from the image to distract your attention - and mash it up with everything that’s beautiful about digital.
And its surprisingly FAST! Actually its faster than normal because of the way it constantly grabs the forthcoming images. So by the time you want to see more, they’re already loaded. Brilliant! FYI its heaps better in Firefox.

It’s been a wild and intense 6 months since Mr. Black and myself launched our t-shirt brand the-affair. Apart from boring countless people at every opportunity with tales of our exploits across the blogosphere, we’ve actually been posting our tees off to exotic and unexpected destinations all over this little globe of ours.
Tempers have been frayed, our sanity was threatened, and calls from friends and concerned family members went unanswered and ignored. Many late nights, cups of tea and cigarettes later, we’ve arrived back from the printers with our second humble offering. Like that difficult-second-album, we deliberated, mused and mulled over the themes and artwork for an unnecessarily long time.
Continuing to turn to literature for inspiration, we took ideas from William Gibson’s techno-nerd-cyber-punk novel ‘Neuromancer’ as well as developing a rather clever interpretation of a quote by every MBA’s favourite intellectual, Niccolo Machiavelli.
Anyway check them all out here, the-affair. As always, all feedback is very much appreciated.

Pink Teddy Invasion is a self-initiated project by the very talented illustrator Cristina Guitian. The cute style of the bears is juxtaposed with a series of deformities, seemingly as a response to the generic perfection of our media culture. And its the fragility of these deformities that makes each bear feel so human.
Using her friends as “agents” to spread the stickers globally, the project is also an experiment in the power (and dedication) of the network. Real people find real ‘homes’ for the teddies. And each new home that is found is photographed and uploaded to the project archive by the agents themselves, preserving the authenticity of the message that we should celebrate diversity.
And of course, there’s a facebook page you can join to stay on top of all future sightings!

Adland is not usually known for its prescience, but after today that all might (hopefully) change - courtesy of this piece of perfectly-timed advertising in response to the recent Obama / Clinton “lovefest”. Just in time for Super Tuesday, the ‘Axe Effect’ is so strong that Clinton has defaulted to Obama. Its so far from being true as to be actually quite funny. As such, it is a nice (if temporary) tangent from their normal positioning.
