So after some fairly random surfing, I came across this show produced by the Discovery Channel called 2057. The basic idea is that they take the production values of Hollywood blockbusters and mesh them with 'science-fact' (point of contention here, how can it be fact when you're posturing about the future? but anyway...) Some really interesting ideas that were touched on in movies like 'The Island' and 'Minority Report' come to life as potential realities for us all... Watch them all on google video. Bring it on!

You know what really pisses me off about fashion mags is when they say, "black is the new black". No, black is the old black and its always fucking fashionable. Nevertheless, the Japanese (never ones to miss a fad) certainly think that its the latest thing - black toilet paper, black toothpaste, black ear cleaners, black eggs, black planes, black tofu. Shit everything's black. And you know the best bit - the bit that the luxury/fashion houses found out a long time ago - if its black, you can charge more!
Must admit though, that plane looks stealth...

Wine that loves is like "Wine for Dummies" but for the ADD-generation. Why bother to learn about anything when some clever marketing can do it for you? Cynicism aside, its actually some lovely bold, and most importantly simple, graphic design on the bottles. Shame about the website...

One for all the never-grown-ups out there... Remember the car in Dukes of Hazard? You know the one you just had to have a model of to play in the dirt? Of course you do...
Anyway, artist James Ford decided it would be cool to make his own - by covering a real car in little models of real cars. Kinda like that scene with the factory that makes models of little factories in Austin Powers! Either way, the result is certainly impressive.

This took me a little while, but in the end his super matter-of-fact face makes this hilarious and brought a smile to my face :) Click through the link for the rest in the series, but IMHO there' no where near as good.

Got too much time on your hands? Maybe you can make something like this for the Transformers movie opening (UK) next week? If not, just sit back and admire the sheer geekiness of it all - but secretly knowing you could've smoked that last dress-up party with one of these! If not, check out the real thing below...

Now i like Homer as much as the next guy, but a 180ft Homer seemingly about to rampage an antique fertility symbol with a donut? Maybe I'm getting old, or maybe I've just been in England too long, but its a bit much for me. They could've put it somewhere like Las Vegas where this type of cheap gimmick is appreciated. Shit, we're all going to see the movie anyway... Reminds me of the Hello Kitty work done by Surface to Air, but nowhere near as cool.

Everyone loves the versatility of post-it notes, and this is by no means a new idea. But the simplicity of using them to create over-large pixels is a beautifully poetic reference to the retro 8-bit content being advertised.
Behind each pixel is a note inviting you to re-live the NES classics - confirming the Wii as not only the coolest console around, but also the guardian of your youth. Brilliant!

This got sent round last week, but I'm only just getting round to it now :( Who hasn't ever wanted to have themselves in the Simpsons? Well here's me with a 'tash and a fresh tan from the Greek islands, now you can have one of yourself too!!! Anyway I'm sure it won't be long before it starts turning up on design studio's 'team' sections...

You've all heard about Hirst's £50m skull, but this is so much cooler. In an art-world equivalent of graff's x-ing out, 'Laura' (its not quite Madonna, or Prince now is it?) has given the ultimate fuck-you to contemporary art's poster boy.
She created an exact replica (albeit sans diamonds) and placed it on a pile of trash outside the gallery a couple of nights ago. Considering the original's price tag, and the fact that it has yet to sell, its a very timely statement on the over-commercialisation of art and the perceived value of some rich wanker's self-indulgence.

This is one of the better viral things i've read about in a while, and shows just how fast news spreads from off- to on-line. At first glance, the site itself seems not to be working, but highlighting the text is still fun, in a pre-1994 kindaway ;) Then, on reading the comments, I found this: "if you copy and past the haha’s in ms word and replace all of the “h”s and “a”s with nothing, the remaining letters spell “see you in december”".

The Republic Of Ideas is billed as "a place to swap ideas". It launches in September, and word on the street is that its going to be an 'new ideas marketplace', i guess not unlike OpenAd, but potentially more digitally-led. At the moment there's some nice motion/type goinng on, so let's wait and see...

Check out this Digital Water Pavillion proposed for the 2008 Expo in Zaragoza, Spain. Essentially the 4 exterior walls are nothing more than sheets of falling water. Using the latest tech from MIT, they can precisely control when and where the water comes out - effectively making these walls into a pixel-screen with all its ensuing possibilities.
Now not sure how many of you have been to Zaragoza, but its nowhere near the coast, its hot and its bone-dry. Which will make this building even more of a statement. I just hope they open it up to SMS messages from the crowd. Now that would be awesome.
