Look at the detail in this lovely print ad for Tide, by Saatchi & Saatchi.

The reacTable is a thing of true beauty and tactility. Created by the Music Technology Group at the Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona, its one of the coolest pieces of new tech I have ever seen.
They describe it as “a collaborative electronic music instrument with a tabletop tangible multi-touch interface”. You kind of have to watch the video to understand what this means, but the simple version goes like this: ‘fucking amazing’! Essentially it demystifies the production of sound, but apart from this invaluable educational aspect, its a truly interactive thing which just makes you want to play with it more and more. this is the golden aim of physical computing made real.
NB to all you trance producers out there, if this ever gets into the mainstream you’re going to be completely fucked ;)

Just found this again today, couldn’t resist. One of the all-time best IMHO.

Running the Numbers: An American Self-Portrait is an aethestic poem on the un-abstraction of statistics (otherwise known as data visualisation). Interestingly, rather than using Flash or some other computer-based methodology, Chris Jordan uses photography.
Above you can see 2x images of the same work, “Prison Uniforms, 2007″. Measuring 10×23 feet in six vertical panels, it depicts 2.3 million folded prison uniforms, equal to the number of Americans incarcerated in 2005. These must be truly amazing at their 1:1 scale…

Created by Rem Koolhaas’ OMA, the RAK Convention and Exhibition Centre (UAE), represents in their words: “a final attempt at (21C architectural) distinction… through a return to pure form.”
Whatever.
To me it looks as if they’ve just discovered Ryan Church’s conceptual art for the Star Wars films. Anyway full credit to them, cause who wouldn’t want to see a fully operational Death Star in the middle of the desert?

Or so they say… anyway vecteezy is a nascent archive of vector assets that might just save you some time in the future

And you thought pop-up books were just for kids! This is an awesomely creative re-use of the old popup book mechanic. Don’t know who did it, but if you’re out there what a great idea - and like the best - its simple and well executed.

AddArt is a super cool project that replaces online ad units with pieces of art from a curated database. Apart from the awfully weak example (above, why can’t the Americans get over their fucking eagles?), my only quip is that its Firefox only :( Although its still in development so i guess there’s more to come.
In their words, “AddArt attempts to do something more interesting than just blocking ads - it turns your browser into an art gallery. Every time you visit the New York Times online or check the weather you’ll also see a spattering of images by a young contemporary artist.” Brought to you by the good crew at eyebeam.

Nothing you haven’t seen before (in fact it smacks of Banksy) but i love the detail in the note-able art direction (sorry couldn’t help it) as well as the advertising-esquye strapline “Bringing dreams to life: More Militerry, Less Skools”.

Solid work by DDB in this purely visual campaign for Tonka, “Ain’t no girlie sissies gonna be playin with ma boy!” If only sandboxes were like that when I was a kid!

I saw this unusual vending machine when walking around Stoke Newington the other day… Ok so its not one of those fancy heated ones you get in Japan, but it does vend ‘Art for the People’ for the decidedly un-princely sum of £2.
Unfotrunately I didn’t have 2 quid, so i can’t tell you what exactly this democratic art actually is, but i guess i like the sentiment :) In fact it could be, and probably is, a piece of art in itself questioning the burgeoning commercialisation of the haute-art world. I guess my marketing-laced brain couldn’t make the connection there and then…
So if anyone knows anything more about this most enigmatic of vending machines, I’d love you to share your thoughts
// UPDATE //
Ok, so it seems that there is a network of these machines around London, maintained by a crew called Hayvend. They vend randomly selected pieces of tiny art in little cardboard boxes.

Mr Bingo’s got a great series of beautifully simple and stylistic portraits based on people’s hair only. There’s one for Star Wars, Great Thinkers, Guns ‘n’ Roses (above) and one other which is obviously not that memorable or i’d have it in this list. I chose the gunners cause i used to be the biggest fan (yawn!)

Ryan McGinley was recently awarded Young Photographer of the Year. His photos remind me of Bill Henson, but more hedonistic and without the haunting darkness. In a way this makes them less interesting, but beautiful and real/honest nonetheless…

Check this slick teaser ad for Goodfoot… The editing and sound are spot on, but what I really like is the simplicity of the art direction and the disembodied quality it creates - its not about the mad skater, but the kicks he’s in.

This Happened is an initiative begun by some interactive guys here in london to expose the processes and methods - the stories in fact - behind interaction design.
Having just seen North Kingdom present the behind-the-scenes stories from the ‘Got Milk?’ campaign at OFFF, I’m very excited that this sort of thing will become something more regular, and outside of the conference circuit. I sincerely applaud their desire to “encourage people to be more open in their methods and ideas”…
Count me in for the next one!
